Meet Sanjay’s Super Team in New Concept Art

Take a look at concept art from the new Disney•Pixar short film, Sanjay’s Super Team

Hitting theaters next month before screenings of Disney•Pixar‘s The Good Dinosaur is the short film Sanjay’s Super Team, which blends Hindu culture with superhero animation. Today sees the release of eight new pieces of Sanjay’s Super Team concept art, all of which you can check out in the gallery viewer below!

In the same way that The Good Dinosaur hails from first-time feature director Pete Sohn (who previously directed the short Partly Cloudy), Sanjay’s Super Team arrives from a new wave of Pixar artists. Sanjay Patel, who has spent more than 20 years working in animation, began at Pixar on A Bug’s Life. In Sanjay’s Super Team, Patel relates a personal story about his relationship with his father and a childhood caught his father’s deep reverence for Hinduism and his own love of western culture, particularly super hero cartoons.

In Sanjay’s Super Team, moviegoers will meet three different Hindu deities: the monkey-like Hanuman, the goddess of power and protection Durga, and the blue-skinned Vishnu, who represents preservation. Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) provides the soundtrack for the story, which, like many of Pixar’s other shorts, contains no dialogue.

In addition to three stills from the short film, the below gallery contains Sanjay’s Super Team concept art and color guides. As you can see from the 2D superhero designs (part of the cartoon series that young Sanjay watches in the short), the short aims to deliver some visuals that are unlike anything Pixar has attempted in the past.

Sanjay’s Super Team arrives alongside The Good Dinosaur, in theaters November 25. Be sure to check out our recent Good Dinosaur behind the scenes coverage, straight from Pixar itself in Emeryville, California.
