John C. Reilly Has Signed On For ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’

I think we all know with Disney, sequels are never about ifs but whens. We already have an unsurprising continuation of Frozen confirmed to be in the works, so it would seem Wreck-It Ralph 2 was only a matter of time, and that time is today as the voice of the titular character, John C. Reilly, revealed he’s signed on to lend his voice talents to the forthcoming animated movie.

Reilly unveiled the announcement at the Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland’s international film festival where the actor was this year’s guest of honor. His name on the dotted line is about as much information that’s known at this point-in-time. When the movie would be gearing towards production, when he would be getting in the booth to record lines or when the animation studio would hope to have this movie ready for theaters is all still unknown at this moment.

Also confirming the animated sequel is program producer Penny Hart, who tweeted the following not long after Reilly’s announcement:

This news isn’t necessarily shocking. Both Reilly and fellow voice actor Sarah Silverman were pretty confident back when the original came out in 2012 of its sequel prospects. And while nothing official has come out beyond this tidbit, Rich Moore, the director of the original film, hasn’t been shy about revealing some of his ideas for a new movie either. He’s also apparently talked with Reilly himself, whom has an additional story material credit on the first Wreck-It Ralph, concerning they should do with the new movie.

In addition to trying to squeeze in a few more video game superstars into the mix, like Mario, Luigi and Link for instance, the director told Hypable two years ago about possibly exploring more than one Ralph and having the characters game-jumping into different video game worlds, including other games of Fix-It Felix, Jr. located inside their arcade.

It’s not clear if this is still the idea the filmmakers would wish to delve into through this newly-confirmed feature. As someone who thought Wreck-It Ralph worked best when it explored the world of the games — and not just the sole worlds of Sugar Rush and Hero’s Duty — this would seem like the most beneficial route to examine. Disney certainly has the wallet to pony-up the money for the rights to get more game big shots into the mix. Surely they can have a little more fun with the concept. [Entertainment.ie]
