Sony Slates ‘I Saw the Light’ for Awards Slot, Tom Hiddleston Looking for First Nom

Sony Pictures Classics has dated Marc Abraham‘s I Saw the Light for a Nov. 27 release, which all but guarantees an Oscar push for the film and most likely a big push for Tom Hiddleston who stars in the feature as legendary country western singer Hank Williams.

The pic is now slotted alongside fellow Oscar hopeful The Danish Girl, though both films will probably be looking to make a big splash on the Fall film festival circuit, already establishing an awards season narrative before the general public lays their eyes on either of them.

The pic, which also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Bradley Whitford, David Krumholtz and Cherry Jones, chronicles Williams’ meteoric rise to fame and its ultimately tragic effect on his health and personal life.

Hiddleston is probably best known to most as Loki from The Avengers film franchise, but 2015 is looking to be a year where he makes a name for himself outside the superhero franchise after sitting out Avengers: Age of Ultron and getting a jump on things with last year’s wonderful film Only Lovers Left Alive. This year he’ll be seen in Guillermo del Toro‘s Crimson Peak followed by Ben Wheatley‘s High-Rise.

Additional stand out credits for Hiddleston beyond the Marvel films include the likes of Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and 2012’s The Deep Blue Sea.

The news comes just as we’re approaching the midway point in 2015 and as I’m putting the final touches on really opening up my Oscar predictions beginning this Wednesday, July 1. Where will Hiddleston place in the field?
