What is It about ‘Sleeping with Other People’ That Makes Me Not Care about Seeing It?

IFC Films paid a hefty, seven-figure price for the romantic dramedy Sleeping With Other People at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and the first trailer for the movie dropped this morning and I just gotta say, I don’t really care if I ever see this movie. I don’t say this because it looks bad, but, I guess because it looks inconsequential.

Starring Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis, the film looks like it has a few solid laughs as they play Lainey and Jake respectively, two college friends who meet again 12 years later at a sex addicts meeting and strike up a friendship, but decide not to have sex because they ruin every sexual relationship they enter. Cue the moment Lainey begins dating and Jake gets jealous leaving the only question as to whether they end up together in the end or somehow manage to find love outside one another.

I’d say odds are 85% on them ending up together, but even that 15% wouldn’t be much of a surprise. What would be a mild surprise is if the film lives up to the title and they get married, end up swingers and even allow one night stands outside their key parties and random, Saturday night ménage à trois.

One of the quotes in the trailer says, “Show up for the sex jokes then be knocked out by the heart.” I don’t deny there might be some heart here and I’ve already said it looks somewhat funny, but I still look at it and don’t see anything all that different. Am I wrong? Can this not only end one of two ways?

Sleeping with Other People releases in theaters on Aug. 21, watch the trailer below.
