2015 Tony Award Predictions, Will it be ‘Fun Home’ or ‘An American in Paris’?

Best Scenic Design of a Musical

My Pick: Bob Crowley, Benjamin Pearcy, and Leo Warner – An American in Paris

Again, people think the production elements of this show are beautiful. If the awards turn out like I am predicting, these technical categories will be how they honor An American in Paris while giving Fun Home the above-the-line awards.

Best Scenic Design of a Play

My Pick: Bunny Christie and Finn Ross – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

The event nature of the show comes from the production. The complicated grid stage they developed is a big reason why people are wowed by this show. Wolf Hall and You Can’t Take it with You have period settings going for them, but I think Curious Incident is going to be a juggernaut.

Best Costume Design of a Musical

My Pick: Catherine Zuber – The King and I

Period costumes. People love period costumes.

Best Costume Design of a Play

My Pick: Christopher Oram – Wolf Hall, Parts 1 & 2

Period costumes. People love period costumes.

Best Lighting Design of a Musical

My Pick: Natasha Katz – An American in Paris

I’m honestly just going on the odds with this selection. It’s a 2/13 favorite, and if my theory about this getting the technical awards is right, this fits right along with that.

Best Lighting Design of a Play

My Pick: Paule Constable – The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

The grid staging is married right along with the show’s lighting. Paule Constable has already won the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Awards for this, and those combine plays and musicals for the lighting category. I can’t see it going anywhere else.

Ultimately, here is what I have the results as:

  1. Fun Home – 6 Wins
  2. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – 5 Wins
  3. An American in Paris – 4 Wins
  4. The King and I – 2 Wins
  5. On the Twentieth Century – 2 Wins
  6. Airline Highway – 1 Win
  7. The Audience – 1 Win
  8. Skylight – 1 Win
  9. Wolf Hall, Parts 1 & 2 – 1 Win
  10. You Can’t Take it with You – 1 Win

Let’s see how my predictions pan out. The Tony Awards will be airing on CBS at 8/7c this Sunday, June 7. Hopefully, hosts Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth put on a great show!
