Martin Freeman Joins the Cast of ‘Captain America: Civil War’

The cast of Captain America: Civil War has grown once more as Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, “Sherlock”) joins the fray, though Marvel doesn’t tell us which character he’ll be playing. Of course, the casting has fans on social media wondering if his character will continue on throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe and eventually be reunited with his “Sherlock” co-star Benedict Cumberbatch who is playing the title role in Doctor Strange.

“From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in ‘The Office,’ Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. “We couldn’t be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Captain America: Civil War follows the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two factions to side with Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic battle between former allies.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo are at the helm with Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Brühl, Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie starring.

The film is also generating buzz as it will feature cameos from Captain Marvel as well as the new Spider-Man. Who will fill those roles? We’ll find out soon enough, but the film hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
