Director Matthew Vaughn and comic book co-creator Mark Millar have said before they would be interested in making a sequel to Kingsman: The Secret Service if the original film performed well at the box office, and after the film crossed the $400 million worldwide over the weekend, news arrives today that a sequel is very much in the works.
There is yet to be an official announcement from the folks at 20th Century Fox, and we have no word on a timetable either, but The Wrap reports individuals with knowledge of the project have told them the film is a green-light go. Logic dictates we’ll likely see the next installment in a couple years or so, though that depends on several factors including whether Vaughn indeed plans to return and if he winds up taking on the studio’s Flash Gordon reboot/remake/sequel/whatever-it-is.
I have to admit, despite the surprisingly positive reviews and the hyperbolic praise laid upon it by friends of mine, I wasn’t that big a fan of Kingsman. It was good at times, but I struggled to stay invested in it at others. If it were up to me I’d say “no” to a sequel, but I’m just one guy and admittedly I have no power to make such a decision. The suits at Fox, however, do have such authority, and given the original film’s $401.1 million box office performance on a $81 million budget, this one is pretty much a no-brainer.
