It’s still a little amazing to me that Tron 3 (rumored to be titled Tron: Ascension) is actually being made. In 2010 TRON: Legacy was released and managed a mere $400 million worldwide on a $170 million, which is to say it was a bit of a financial disappointment once all costs are taken into account. Disney, however, is ready to roll with production expected to begin in Vancouver this October and Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski is back in the saddle as are, it appears, the two leads.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde will be back for the third feature as Sam Flynn and Quorra respectively.
The return of Hedlund, as far as I’m concerned, was assumed, but the return of Quorra was a must. While Legacy was a bit of a letdown for me, the ending offered up so many fascinating story possibilities as Quorra was an algorithm made flesh by the film’s finale. You don’t need fancy CGI to make that interesting, and hopefully whomever they’ve hired to write the screenplay will be able to take it in new and fascinating directions.
If you need a reminder concerning those final moments in TRON: Legacy, here you go.
