Emmanuel Lubezki and ‘Birdman’ Take ASC Cinematographers Award

For the second year in a row, Emmanuel Lubezki wins with the American Society of Cinematographers, taking the 2015 ASC Award for best cinematography in a feature film for Birdman. Lubezki won last year for his work on Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity and you can pretty much chalk up an Oscar win for him this coming Sunday. I guess Guillermo del Toro needs to work with Lubezki to give all “three amigos” a chance at Oscar glory.

Also last night, the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) handed out their awards, which saw American Sniper winning for best sound editing in a feature, English language film. Unbroken won for best dialogue/ADR, Birdman won for best music and Get On Up won for best sound editing in a feature… musical?

I have Birdman taking the Sound Editing award at the Oscars, but if I were to look at the MPSE and Cinema Audio Society (CAS), I would switch my picks and give American Sniper editing and Birdman the Sound Mixing award. Oh boy, the trials and tribulations of Oscar prognostication.

The Oscar Overture is almost complete as we wait for the Costume Designers Guild to hand out their awards on the 17th and the Spirit Awards are this Saturday, one day before the Oscars. To see all the precursor winners so far click here and stay tuned as I will have write-ups concerning this year’s short film crop and later this week complete predictions for all the Oscar categories as well as polls for you to vote for who you think will win.
