Well, if you depend on the guilds and societies to help you predict your Oscar ballots the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) and Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild handed out their awards last night adding a little fuel to the fire.
I think most people have American Sniper taking the Sound Mixing award at the Oscars, but if you want to go the way of the CAS you’ll be putting Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) on that top line. Sound mixers Thomas Varga, Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño, Gustavo Borner, Jason Oliver and John Sanacore took home the CAS Award for best live action sound editing while the animated award went to the team behind Big Hero 6 — Gabriel Guy, David Fluhr, Alan Meyerson and Mary Jo Lang.
Meanwhile, over with the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild it was a big night for the teams behind The Grand Budapest Hotel and Guardians of the Galaxy with Birdman sneaking in one award for good measure.
Grand Budapest won for best period and/or character makeup as well as hair styling while Guardians won for best contemporary makeup and best special effects makeup. It was Birdman winning for best contemporary hair styling.
It’s Grand Budapest and Guardians competing with Foxcatcher for Best Makeup and Hair Styling at the Oscars.
Meanwhile, the Writers Guild handed out their honors last night as well, awarding The Grand Budapest Hotel Best Original Screenplay honors and The Imitation Game won Best Adapted Screenplay.
We’re only one week away from the 2015 Oscars, oh boy.
