I did not make a most anticipated films of 2015 list, but one of the films that easily would have made it is the forthcoming adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s Macbeth. First off, it is an excellent play that I will rarely get tired of seeing a version of. Secondly, it stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard as the titular Macbeth and his Lady, respectively. Those are two phenomenal actors, and I cannot wait to see how they interpret to of the Bard’s greatest roles.
Meanwhile, Fassbender and his Macbeth director Justin Kurzel were already tapped to reteam for a very different kind of film, the adaptation of the video game Assassin’s Creed, and I guess they just felt the triangle must not be broken. Deadline.com is reporting Cotillard, enjoying another Oscar nomination for her tremendous performance in Two Days, One Night, will join the cast as well.
I have not played a single second of any of the Assassin’s Creed games, so I do not know what roles Cotillard could be playing, as which particular part she signed on for has not been reported. The game centers on a bartender (Fassbender) captured by a secret corporation and sent back in time to relive the memories of his ancestors — all of them assassins — and retrieve ancient artifacts. I don’t see a part in there for Cotillard, but I hope it turns into a good movie.
The reputation for video game adaptations is down right awful, but a good one can be done. It just has to be.
Assassin’s Creed is set to be released December 21, 2016, and Macbeth comes to us later this year courtesy of The Weinstein Company.
