Box Office: ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Off to $8.6 Million Start from Thursday Night Screenings

I’ll be curious to see the CinemaScore for Fifty Shades of Grey this weekend, more than any previous CinemaScore that I can remember. Critical reviews and Internet comment sections will never give the true opinion of the people seeing this film, though I’m sure some interesting posts will be found on Facebook. There is interest, however, as Thursday night screenings of the film amassed $8.6 million and while these aren’t Twilight or The Hunger Games numbers, they are much better than the $2.5 million Sex and the City saw in 2008 and nearly triple Sex and the City 2 took in from midnight screenings in 2010. The first Sex and the City film opened to the tune of $57 million as it’s looking more and more like Fifty Shades may hit the $70-80 million number this weekend, if not higher.

You can read my review of the movie here and I’ll have a complete box office wrap-up on Sunday morning.
