In all honesty, the only things I really remember about Star Trek Into Darkness are: 1) the film’s “big reveal” was extremely anticlimactic, and 2) I didn’t much care for the movie in any way. I am not a big Trek fan in general, but I thoroughly enjoyed J.J. Abrams‘s 2009 reboot, so Star Trek Into Darkness was more than a bit disappointing.
I’m hopeful Justin Lin‘s next entry into the franchise, Star Trek 3, is better, and if these latest rumors are to be believed, the film will look to new female characters and a Bryan Cranston-esque villain, who might wind up being played by Cranston himself, to take it to the next level.
It’s important to note none of this is confirmed, but according to Film Divider the plan for the next installment is to introduce “at least three major new female characters” to the franchise. According to the site — and here is your warning for potential spoilers — one of these female characters is rumored to be the captain of another Federation ship; the second, the President of the United Federation of Planets; and the third, the ex-wife of Karl Urban‘s character, Bones.
As for that Cranston rumor, Film Divider says the actor has “had words” with Paramount about taking on the role that is supposedly right up his alley. I assume “Bryan Cranston-like” is a nod to the intensity the actor brings to his roles, namely his Emmy-winning performances in the recently-ended series “Breaking Bad“. Cranston would certainly be an interesting addition to a cast that already includes the likes of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and others.
Film Divider says it isn’t yet known if the role is for an all-new character or a familiar name within the Star Trek universe, but let’s just hope we don’t see another botched bait-and-switch a la Star Trek Into Darkness. Star Trek 3 is slated to hit theaters July 8, 2016, so I can only assume we’ll know more on this soon. Stay tuned.
