‘Zoolander 2’ Moving Forward as Penelope Cruz Joins the Sequel

I was very late to the Zoolander train, largely because I thought it looked stupid and, sure enough, it is, but in a very, very, very good way. I enjoyed the hell out of it when I saw it back in 2008. Well, for about as long as I can remember Ben Stiller has been trying to get a sequel off the ground and it seems the recent success of Dumb and Dumber To, which brought in $36 million its opening weekend on a $40 million budget, has caused Paramount to reconsider moving forward on the sequel 13 years after it first hit theaters.

Expected to return are, Stiller, of course as Derek Zoolander, Owen Wilson as Hansel and Will Ferrell as Mugatu and now Deadline reports Penelope Cruz is attached to the project which has Justin Threoux (Dedication) attached to direct from his own script.

As for story, last I heard it centered on Derek getting hired to be a personal model for an Arab Sheikh, which is when he finds out models are being turned into oil. Whether or not that remains the plot, Thereoux spoke with Vulture over the summer concerning his role in “The Leftovers“, and managed to ask about the long-gestating sequel. “Yeah, we’ve got a script for the sequel, and we’ve just been in talks again,” he said. “We’re trying to sharpen it and hone it and, actually, I don’t want to jinx anything, but it looks like it actually might be starting to get up and running.”

Sounds like it will Justin, no word yet on when exactly, but I think this is cause for a visit back to the orange mocha frappuccino… don’t you think?
