Watch: 2015 Oscar Writers Roundtable with Nolan, Flynn, Rock, Favreau, McCarten & Moore

You know The Hollywood Reporter is in full awards season mode when their annual award season roundtables start going up. Spending an hour with a collection of people who created some of the most celebrated films of the year is really a thrill. They are sometimes a bit too formal, but I can get past that if you have interesting talent surrounding the table.

This particular roundtable is for the writers. It includes Jon Favreau (Chef), Jonathan Nolan (Interstellar), Chris Rock (Top Five), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl), Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), and Graham Moore (The Imitation Game). The six writers discuss unhappy endings, their writing inspirations, and the unknowns in writing.

I know there are plenty of you out there who are or want to be writers. I am certainly one of those people. It’s conversations like these we feed on. We always hope to learn a little something from the people we admire, and an hour long conversation with them is a perfect way to get that. It is a very rare opportunity to hear from screenwriters, as many films just choose to shove them off to the side. Film is a director’s medium, yes, but the writer is still so important to the process. Even if you did not love the film they wrote (such is the case with me and Favreau’s Chef), you can still enjoy what they talk about.
