The last time Bill Murray and Sofia Coppola did something together we got Lost in Translation, which I consider one of the best movies of the past fifteen years. I have been eagerly anticipating the teaming of Murray and Coppola again. Well, it was just announced that will be happening. However, in a rather unexpected move, the two will be going to television. And they are not just going to television. They are making a Christmas special, complete with Murray singing Christmas carols. This news has me very confused but very intrigued.
Bill Murray has been known to do whatever he wants, both in his personal and professional life, so at this point, him wanting to do something out of left field like this should not shock me. He does what he finds amusing, and you can only respect someone like that. The more curious thing to me is why Sofia Coppola is doing this. Her making a TV special seems odd to me. How will she incorporate troubled young people meandering through life?
About the project, Murray said:
We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose.
I get the sense that they are still trying to figure out what this project will turn into, but all I can say is I will definitely watch it. It could be an amorphous blob of a special, but it will no doubt be interesting. I also want Bill Murray singing. I need more of that in my life.
