I was one of the many who was pleasantly surprised by X-Men: Days of Future Past, though that is still a terrible title. It proved the X-Men franchise was still viable for something fresh and Bryan Singer could still direct a good film. When I walked out of the theater, the thought of “Where was Anna Paquin?” never crossed my mind. However, I guess that question was asked enough times because 20th Century Fox will be releasing a “Rogue Cut” of the film on DVD and Blu-ray in 2015.
The extended version of the film will feature over ten minutes of new material. You read that right. Ten whole minutes. Those ten minutes will include scenes cut from the film featuring Paquin as Rogue, as well as other characters. In a film where we had to keep up with two Charles Xaviers (Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy), two Magnetos (Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and, of course, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), more characters was not what this film needs.
However, if a fanboy/girl wants it bad enough, he/she will probably get it eventually, which seems to be the case here. A recognizable character? Put her in! Why? Because!
I think the film is perfectly fine the way it is. You do not need extra scenes of characters simply because you know who they are. If she was integral to the plot of the film, she would not have been cut out, especially in a marketing heavy world like superhero films.
The theatrical cut of the film is set to debut on DVD and Blu-ray on October 14th, which you can preorder on Amazon. If you missed it in the theater, I highly recommend giving it a watch, even just for Evan Peters’ Quicksilver scenes.
