How many times have we heard Ghostbusters 3 is just around the corner and ready to begin filming? How many directors have been attached and will Dan Aykroyd ever be over talking about it?
The most recent rumor had Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) attached as director and the idea of turning the film into a whole new thing, “new” in that it would center on a group of female ghostbusters. In response to that, Bill Murray recently shared his thoughts on who those females should be telling the Toronto Star, “Melissa McCarthy would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny – God, she’s funny! I like this girl Linda Cardellini a lot, and Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”
When asked about Murray’s suggestions, Wiig told Yahoo, “I will do whatever Bill Murray tells me to.”
Personally, I actually like this “female ghostbusters” idea and the names Murray mentioned, are largely those that were spit-balled by many people when the rumor first started, but now Aykroyd is talking once again and the word “Marvel” was uttered making me cringe.
“It’s up on blocks, it needs new electronics, new everything,” Aykroyd told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s what we have to do. The whole vehicle of Ghostbusters has to be rebuilt. That’s the ambitious thinking that’s going on now. Taking on the model of Marvel where we take all of the elements that are in this movie and we put them out there as different ideas.”
It sounds like the idea of “world building” is catching on and I can appreciate the thought, but does every franchise need ever “i” dotted and “t” crossed? “What’s the totality of it?” Aykroyd pondered, “The whole mythology from the beginning of their lives, the end of their lives. Ghostbusters at nine years old, Ghostbusters in high school.” I’m sorry, but when I consider those things and the classic ’80s films the only thing that comes to my mind is, Who cares?
