Julianne Moore Back in Oscar Race as Sony Classics Acquires ‘Still Alice’

There were a few films that played Toronto that I, regretfully, missed. One of which was Still Alice from directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland starring Julianne Moore, Kristen Stewart, Alec Baldwin, Kate Bosworth and Hunter Parrish. It appears, however, I won’t have to wait long to see it for myself as Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights to the film and it will see a fall 2014 release of some kind.

It was previously assumed Maps to the Stars would serve as a possible Oscar bid for Julianne Moore after she won Best Actress at Cannes for her role in what is actually a terrible film, but with Focus World acquiring that film and pushing the release date to 2015 the chance for an Oscar nomination were dashed. Well, reviews for Still Alice out of the Toronto Film Festival were very good and with the Sony Classics acquisition a chance for an Oscar nomination for Moore is back on the table.

The film centers on Alice Howland (Moore), happily married with three grown children, she is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a devastating diagnosis, Alice and her family find their bonds tested. Alice’s struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring.

There is still no official release date, but this is just the latest film Sony Classics has added to their Oscar stable, which includes Foxcatcher, Whiplash and Mr. Turner among others.

Check out the first clip from the movie below along with more pictures. Looks like I’ll have to update those Best Actress predictions from yesterday.
