David Fincher Can See ‘Dragon Tattoo’ Sequel Being Made

David Fincher seems to think there is still hope The Girl Who Played with Fire could still find its way to the big screen. The director told the Swedish site Afton Bladet that while 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo brought in $232+ million worldwide it wasn’t enough to make up for the production costs.

However, as much as the film cost to produce, it also cost money to gain the rights, but is that enough for the studio to continue with the series? “I think because the studio has already spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script it will result in something,” Fincher said (translated through Google). “The script we now have has huge potential, I can reveal as much as it is extremely different from the book.”

Last we heard, Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) was hired to rewrite the script, but there’s no telling if any additional work was done beyond that.

Meanwhile, while Gone Girl is right around the corner, Fincher also has “Utopia” at HBO as well as a newly announced project at the cable television studio he’s working on with James Ellroy. So, chances this gets made and with Fincher…. eh, I wouldn’t hold my breath despite his apparent optimism. [via The Playlist]
