I’m not going to dwell on this weekend’s box office for too long as I have work here in Toronto to do, not to mention it should be forgotten altogether as the top 20 fell below $59 million for what is the worst weekend at the box office since the weekend following 9/11 back in 2001. Yeah, it’s that bad.
The only new wide release this weekend and what is being considered the first movie of the Fall 2014 season, The Identical opened in 1,956 theaters to a pathetic $1.91 million, averaging only $977 per theater. I couldn’t even tell you for sure what the film is about, nor do I care, and it would seem neither did opening weekend audiences. The film did receive a “B” CinemaScore and it just might creep into the top ten if it can somehow find a little sympathy today, but as of now it’s edged out by Lucy by under $40,000.
At #1 for the third weekend in a row and fourth weekend overall is Guardians of the Galaxy, which is now just $5.5 million shy of becoming the first domestic release of 2014 to crack the $300 million mark.
And that’s all I have time for today. Next weekend will see the release of Dolphin Tale 2 and No Good Deed as well as the limited release of The Skeleton Twins, which is to say I don’t expect next weekend to be much better than this one.
