Gregg Araki‘s White Bird in a Blizzard played the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and Magnolia will be releasing it on VOD on September 25 followed by a limited theatrical release on October 24. There are only a handful of reviews listed on RottenTomatoes so it’s hard to get an idea for this one based on that, though if I remember correctly there seemed to be a measure of muted praise, and the cast is certainly impressive.
The ensemble includes Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Gabourey Sidibe, Thomas Jane, Dale Dickey, Mark Indelicato, Sheryl Lee and Angela Bassett and here’s the official synopsis:
Kat Connors is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother, Eve, a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears – just as Kat is discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, she barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock, for the loss. In fact, it’s almost a relief. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it…
I will say this, the trailer makes it look somewhat intriguing, a film that might keep us on our toes. It also looks like Green may have found yet another film to get naked in. So… there’s that.
