Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu‘s Birdman is set to open the Venice Film Festival and now it will close the New York Film Festival, which means… will it go for all four fall film fests? Three? I have to admit, I’d be disappointed to learn Birdman was not playing Toronto, which will be announcing their line-up tomorrow, because I fully expect it to screen at Telluride.
It will definitely be screening at either Telluride or Toronto given the fact the New York Film Festival announcement doesn’t say it will be a North American premiere so with the world premiere at Venice, where will that North American premiere take place?
Birdman, for those unfamiliar, is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself. Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Andrea Riseborough and Amy Ryan co-star.
Also, in related news, there has been talk of the film containing a 40 minute tracking shot, but The PLaylist noticed a tweet asking Inarritu if that were true to which he replied, “No it’s just shot and edited to look that way.”
