There’s a scene in Richard Linklater‘s upcoming film Boyhood (and don’t read the rest of this paragraph if you want to know absolutely nothing about the film) where Mason (Ellar Coltrane) and his father, Mason Sr. (Ethan Hawke), are sitting around a campfire and Mason Sr. asks, “So do you think they’ll ever make another Star Wars?” It’s a comical question, especially given the nature of the film being shot over the past 12 years and even more so as they reach the consensus that no, they won’t, because after Return of the Jedi where do you take it? Well, I guess we’ll know where they’ll take it in about 19 months as what Mason and his father predicted wouldn’t happen is about to come true and today is Day 1.
J.J. Abrams‘ production house, Bad Robot, tweeted the following picture of the clapper board used on set for Star Wars: Episode VII announcing today is the first day of principal photography on the sequel. Where will the story take us? No one knows for sure. Rumors have floated around — is Adam Driver playing Han Solo’s (Harrison Ford) son and has he been seduced by the Dark Side? — but those are merely rumors.
For now all we have to look forward to are the next 19 months of hype and build-up. Come December 18, 2015 we’ll find out if any of it was worth it.
