Protagonist Pictures has released the first picture from Yorgos Lanthimos‘ new comedy The Lobster starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux, Olivia Colman, Ariane Labad, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Ashley Jensen, Michael Smiley and Jessica Barden in a story every bit what you’d expect from the director of Alps and Dogtooth.
Described as an unconventional love story, The Lobster is set in a dystopian near future where single people, according to the rules of the Town, are arrested and transferred to the Hotel. There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into the Woods. A desperate Man escapes from the Hotel to the Woods where the Loners live and there he falls in love, although it’s against their rules.
The way words such as Town, Hotel, Woods and Man are capitalized in the synopsis makes me wonder if that’s exactly how they’ll be known in the film itself. As for a release date, I know it’s expected to hit the UK in 2014 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it at either Toronto or Venice later this year.
