The run at #1 for Captain America: The Winter Soldier ends at three weekends in a row as the female audience base came out this weekend in support of The Other Woman starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton. Opening with $24.7 million, the $40 million budgeted feature defied the negative critical reaction and audiences seemed decently satisfied with a “B+” CinemaScore, which translates to “we enjoyed it, no real love though.”
The film should continue to do decent numbers for Fox given the lack of similarly themed films for the next few weeks, and depending on word of mouth it could end up a solid little hit for the studio.
As far as Captain America 2 is concerned, it has now passed $645 million worldwide, making it the third highest grossing entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just above Thor: The Dark World‘s $644.8 million. Interestingly enough, $108 million of that worldwide total came from China where Captain America: The First Avenger didn’t even open. No stopping Marvel at this point and Guardians of the Galaxy is next.
Oh, and speaking of milestones, in its 23rd weekend, Frozen passed $400 million domestically, making it the 19th all-time highest grossing domestic release. Worldwide it sits at number six with $1.14 billion.
The weekend’s next new wide release was Brick Mansions, the Paul Walker and RZA remake of the French actioner District B13, and it did exactly as expected, coming in with $9.6 million, also earning a “B+” CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
The Quiet Ones lived up to its title, bringing in only $4 million to go along with a “C+” CinemaScore, though the studio was sure to note in an email this morning that it was merely an acquisition and so the financial exposure is very limited. Not sure I’d go bragging about that considering the marketing for the film was limited to TV spots and few screenings for critics.
Next weekend the cineplex will be dominated by The Amazing Spider-Man 2, do you see this being the year’s first $100 million opener? Captain America came close with $95 million, but I have to assume Spidey is going to top that.
