Jolie’s ‘Unbroken’ to be Yearlong Oscar Target

Hitfix has a report from this year’s CinemaCon where Angelina Jolie was on hand to promote her upcoming sophomore directorial effort, Unbroken. If you remember, I already placed the film at #1 on my early Best Picture predictions and her CinemaCon appearance reaffirms the film’s early frontrunner status. Though, like NCAA Basketball, being a preseason #1 only proves to put a target on your back, it’s anything but a guaranteed victory.

Unbroken won’t be hitting theaters until December 25 and its star power behind the camera is impressive from Jolie in the director’s chair, to screenwriters Richard LaGravenese, William Nicholson and Joel and Ethan Coen, cinematographer Roger Deakins and composer Alexandre Desplat.

The film is based on the New York Times bestselling book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption” by Laura Hillenbrand (“Seabiscuit: An American Legend”), and follows the incredible life story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII–only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Domhnall Gleeson, Finn Wittrock, Jai Courtney and Garrett Hedlund co-star.

Check out the extended preview from this year’s Sochi Olympics directly below. It will be interesting to see how this film ends up performing in the face of a lot of competition.
