Reviews for Divergent started rolling in over the weekend. I haven’t read any of them as I’ll be seeing it tomorrow night, but according to Deadline it’s tracking for a massive $50-60 million opening weekend and I have to say… I don’t get it.
It was evident films such as Harry Potter and Twilight were going to be big and we knew The Hunger Games would at least make money, though I’ll admit to ever expecting it to come to a point where The Hunger Games: Catching Fire would be the highest grossing domestic release of its particular year, but here we are.
Set to hit theaters this weekend, Divergent is set in a future where America is divided into five ideological factions to stabilize society and uphold peace, every citizen must choose a permanent faction at age 16 – either their own or another. Struggling to survive her initiation into the most aggressive and physically demanding of the factions, Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) must uncover her true hidden strengths and risk her family, her new found love, and her very own life to defuse a mysterious conspiracy which could change the balance of power forever.
Word is we can expect the sequels Insurgent in 2015 and Allegiant in 2016, though I’ve been told the books, written by Veronica Roth, only get worse and worse once you get beyond the first one. Perhaps that’s because they’re poorly written and yet the story is still there? If the movie is as big as it’s tracking to be I’m sure we’ll find out.
For now, here’s a clip from the movie, I’ll have a review for you in the next couple days.
