Rooney Mara has joined the cast of Joe Wright‘s Pan, said to be a darker take on J.M. Barrie’s beloved character Peter Pan, the boy who would never grow up.
Mara will play Tiger Lilly, the princess of the Tribe of Native Americans living on the island of Neverland. Yes, you read that correctly, the Native American princess, which means Mara’s casting is sure to throw up some red flags considering she now joins Hugh Jackman who will play Blackbeard and Garett Hedlund as Captain Hook in a film The Wrap says is expected to feature a “very international and multi-racial” cast. Well, off to a good start.
Jason Fuchs (Ice Age: Continental Drift) wrote the screenplay and the film is already set for a July 17, 2015 release through Warner Bros. Seeing how my familiarity with Barrie’s “Peter Pan” is largely through Disney’s animated version and my faint recollections of Steven Spielberg‘s Hook and 2003’s Peter Pan, I can’t remember how many prominent roles there are for minority actors, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
