2014 Oscars: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

“Happy”

I have several photos of Pharrell Williams’ performance of his Oscar-nominated song “Happy” in my gallery from the show last night (start here), and while I’m not a huge fan of the song, him getting Lupita Nyong’o (see here), Amy Adams (see here) and Meryl Streep (see here) to dance, combined with Jennifer Lawrence hoping he doesn’t pick her was great.

Darlene Love

I enjoyed 20 Feet from Stardom and I like Darlene Love, but I’m sorry, her singing during the acceptance speech went on too long for me and reached a point of appreciation to self adulation. Then again, the Oscars is a four hour show about self adulation so why am I so bent out of shape?

Bill Murray Remembers Harold Ramis

After the passing of Harold Ramis there was a lot of talk of the rift between he and Bill Murray following Groundhog Day so I think for a lot of people seeing Murray pay him tribute on the industry’s biggest stage was a nice moment.

Bette Midler

I’m sorry, I just didn’t get it. I mean, I’m sure the “Did you ever know you’re my hero” part of the song was part of some attempt to work it into the Academy’s “Hero” theme for the night, which makes me wonder why they didn’t bring Mariah Carey out as well, but a double In Memoriam just didn’t make sense to me one bit.

The Awards

Oh yeah, some awards were handed out and based on seeing pretty much everyone predicted 21 or more of the winners correctly I’m quite positive there weren’t many surprises. Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio fans actually thought he had a chance of winning and went bonkos on Twitter after he lost, but I didn’t see that and don’t really care, so…

I think I’ve said more than my share about the overall quality of the year when it comes to the awards as we’ve gone on, including naming my own winners, which is to say if you don’t see the nominees and winners there I felt there was better this year.

Finally, I’ll include the poll I opened up last night directly below, but I would love to hear what your favorite moments from the night were and what made you cringe in the comments below. Have at it.
