The Lego Movie continues to light the box office on fire, adding another $31.5 million to its total, bringing its cume to $183.2 million in just 17 days at the box office. No wonder Warner Bros. has already announced The Lego Movie 2 for a May 2017 release.
Lego finishing #1 isn’t a surprise, but second place film is a little bit of a surprise, to me at least, as the Kevin Costner-led 3 Days to Kill managed $12.3 million in three days along with a “B” CinemaScore.
So, yes, in third is the $100 million disaster feature, Pompeii and it really better hope international audiences are more interested in a poorly told love story, told only so a volcano can preserve them in ash because domestic audiences weren’t too interested.
Debuting with a nasty $10 million, Pompeii also received a “B” CinemaScore, but I don’t think we should expect that to mean much of anything as this one won’t be heard from much longer. Then again, I doubt Sony cares much, it was Constantin Films that spent the dough making it and Film District that ponied up the cash to market it. Oh well…
Last weekend’s successful release of About Last Night didn’t exactly hold up too well, dropping 71% to $7.4 million, but given the small budget and the $25.6 million opening I think it’s safe to say this one is a winner. Not much of a winner is Sony’s RoboCop remake, which could only manage $9.4 million this weekend, but with a $100 million budget, $43.6 million domestically isn’t going to pack it.
In other news, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire cracked the all-time domestic top ten as it is now up to $423.6 million while Frozen cracked the top 20 with $384 million as it is still hoping to hit $400 million domestic and over $1 billion worldwide where it sits at $980.3 million as of the posting of this article.
Next weekend’s numbers could be interesting as Liam Neeson saves a plane in Non-Stop and “The Bible” miniseries is boiled down into Son of God for the big screen. Son of God seems like a title that will not only be fun to predict, but nearly impossible as it could be a huge earner. I wonder how they even figure the production budget on that one.
