Marvel is moving into new comic book territory as they are starting to branch out from the comic characters the majority of the general population is familiar with and looking to create excitement out of less familiar characters. Guardians of the Galaxy will be the first test and Ant-Man will be another, and it could prove to be what reinvigorates superhero films for those of us not at all familiar with the characters and it appears the character that’s next in line is Doctor Strange.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word Marvel is currently courting directors for a feature film adaptation of the character who apparently is a surgeon that suffers a life-changing car accident and eventually heads to the Himalayas, gains psychic powers and saves the day. I’m sure there’s more to it, and I could be way off, but it doesn’t really matter right now… does it?
As for the directors currently under consideration you have Mark Andrews (Brave co-director), Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies).
As of now, Kung Fu Panda scribes, Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger, are penning the screenplay.
This one is likely far off in the future, at least a 2016 release, so we still have some time to hear rumors of attachments… such as the one saying Mads Mikkelsen may take on the lead role. Just know there may be a few new interesting super characters coming to theaters soon enough.
