Another day and another first look at a new movie up for sale at the European Film Market. Today the movie is The Forger, directed by Philip Martin (The Call, Exit Wounds) and starring John Travolta, Christopher Plummer and Tye Sheridan (Mud, Tree of Life).
The heist-driven picture tells the story of a former child art prodigy and second generation petty thief, Ray Cutter (Travolta) who arranges to buy his way out of prison to spend time with his ailing son, Will (Sheridan). Ray and his father, Joseph (Plummer), must come together to carry out one last big job for the syndicate who financed his early release.
Having never seen one of Martin’s films I don’t really know what to expect from him, but the cast is intriguing even if the plot sounds a little… ordinary. I can’t, however, say my expectations are high for this one. I guess, however, if it’s treated with something of a tongue-in-cheek nature, almost a father/son/grandfather heist caper, it might stand a chance, but if it’s straight-forward and dramatic, I’m not sure I see Travolta pulling it off. You?
