2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards Live Blog: Winners and Commentary

It’s the first major industry award show of the year as the media has weighed in with their thoughts at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, but tonight the Screen Actors Guild announce the winners of the 2014 SAG Awards and I’ll be offering up some thoughts as the awards are handed out plus announcing the winners live.

As far as the current awards race is concerned, American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave can both get a boost tonight with a Best Ensemble win and it would be very good for 12 Years a Slave if Chiwetel Ejiofor were able to take home Best Actor as Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) is clearly the media’s favorite.

Another close race to watch that also deals with Hustle and Slave is the Best Supporting Actress race. Will it be Lupita Nyong’o following up her Critics Choice win (and wonderful speech) or will Jennifer Lawrence repeat her Globes win? As far as I’m concerned the winner here is likely your Oscar winner… we’ll be watching.

As far as predictions go, I posted mine and RopeofSilicon readers voted and, as it turns out, we’re in accord. Here are the predictions for the five major theatrical categories:

  • BEST ENSEMBLE: American Hustle
  • BEST ACTOR: Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)
  • BEST ACTRESS: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)
  • BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)

We’ll see how things turn out…

You can check out the full list of nominees for both movies and television right here and the results of the RopeofSilicon reader predictions here. Otherwise, the live blog begins directly below and continues over the next several pages for the rest of the night.

Just refresh the page every so often for my updated posts, note the updating winners to the right and I’ll be highlighting winners throughout the night like this.

I’ll be kicking things off around 4:30 PM PST or thereabouts, join me won’t you and pack the comments with your thoughts on the show, the winners and let’s have a couple hours of fun.

[4:13:17 PM] Brad says: Hello and welcome, the first awards of the night have already been handed out with the Lone Survivor and “Game of Thrones” stunt performers being awarded.

[4:18:34 PM] Brad says: I have E! on in the background and Aaron Paul is on the “fashion cam”… Cherish that sentence, because it may be my only comment on tonight’s red carpet.

[4:21:44 PM] Brad says: Wait, did you know CNN covers the red carpet as well?

[4:42:10 PM] Brad says: Giulianna just started her comments to Jennifer Garner saying, “Can I be honest for a second?” Wish Garner had replied, “Because the rest of what you’re going to say is bullshit right?”

[4:53:01 PM] Brad says: Mariah Carey is there… figure that one out.

[4:57:01 PM] Brad says: Just saw Paramount is the first film to start distributing films 100% digitally. The Wolf of Wall Street was said first film. Click here for the story…. now back to the SAGs.

[4:57:33 PM] Brad says: Oh, Mariah Carey is there because she’s friends with Lee Daniels.

[4:57:59 PM] Brad says: We are three minutes away from the start of the show.

[4:59:48 PM] Brad says: Big decision, watch on TBS or TNT? We’re going TBS and “Everybody Love Raymond” is our lead in.

[5:00:03 PM] Brad says: Oh, the wife just switched to TNT. Controversy already!

[5:00:30 PM] Brad says: Can’t wait for the “… and I’m an actor” speeches. Because they’re always so genuine.

[5:01:08 PM] Brad says: The “alright, alright, alright” thing has run its course.

[5:01:28 PM] Brad says: Sounds like a game show announcer was hired to introduce the festivities.

[5:02:56 PM] Brad says: Can’t lie, I feel a little embarrassed to be live blogging this thing on my own. A little sad. A little something inside of me is dying with every word I type.

[5:05:17 PM] Brad says: Kaley Cuoco included in the “I’m an actor” segment. I had to look up how to spell her name and I have no idea what she has ever “acted” in.

[5:05:53 PM] Brad says: Matt Damon is our first presenter and we are only 115 minutes away until this is all over.

[5:06:26 PM] Brad says: First award is Supporting Actress in a Movie…

[5:06:53 PM] Brad says: Lawrence vs. Nyong’o… predictions on this site say Nyong’o… We’ll see.

[5:07:22 PM] Brad says: EAT THE FISH! BITCH!

[5:10:30 PM] Brad says: Not sure anything can move her from the top line of my predictions now.

[5:10:47 PM] Brad says: Now, I think we have to endure several TV winners now.

[5:11:42 PM] Brad says: Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner will now remind us American Hustle is an ensemble nominee… Reminding me this is a show all about millionaires patting each other on the back.

[5:12:00 PM] Brad says: BTW, nice work describing American Hustle as if it was something more than it really was.

[5:12:36 PM] Brad says: Jennifer Garner is next on stage, black dress, smiling… she’s an actor.

[5:12:57 PM] Brad says: Oh, Supporting Actor is next up, then all the TV awards… get up there Jared.

[5:14:18 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

[5:14:55 PM] Brad says: Leto has now won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG. Pretty safe to say he and Cate Blanchett are your two assured locks at the Oscars.

[5:16:36 PM] Brad says: Oh, now Leto is doing “alright, alright, alright”. Great.

[5:16:55 PM] Brad says: Commercial break, I’m going to refill my glass… A little more Elysian IPA sir!

[5:18:17 PM] Brad says: Sorry, still can’t get over the, “My name is Kaley Cuoco, and I’m an actor.” Sure, and I’m a brain surgeon.

[5:18:36 PM] Brad says: Now a commercial for Labor Day, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation that’s not a Nicholas Sparks adaptation.

[5:20:24 PM] Brad says: Love seeing people in the comments already asking how long this show is.

[5:20:56 PM] Brad says: Lyrica will apparently cause suicidal thoughts… FDA approved prescription drugs are the best!

[5:21:18 PM] Brad says: Based on this commercial Lyrica may not be all that beneficial.

[5:22:09 PM] Brad says: Lots of commercials, but we are on TNT and TNT means drama, so they’re just keeping us on edge.

[5:22:25 PM] Brad says: Unless you’re watching on TBS, in that case… LOSER!

[5:23:32 PM] Brad says: Kevin Spacey and Kerry Washington are here and Kerry is pregnant and giving us a glimpse of that baby bump.

[5:23:47 PM] Brad says: Here’s the award for Actress in a comedy series….

[5:25:25 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”)

[5:27:00 PM] Brad says: Julia is doing schtick. She’s funny, I’ll let it slide. After all, I am the one that decides what’s good or not. You knew that right? No? Okay.

[5:27:38 PM] Brad says: Now Actor in a comedy…

[5:28:56 PM] Brad says: It’s hard to express how little I care about TV awards.

[5:29:50 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Ty Burell (“Modern Family”)

[5:31:45 PM] Brad says: Friend of mine is so excited over the Seahawks game tomorrow he can hardly contain himself. Speaking of which, sorry if any of you are Niner fans, because, uh, they’re going down.

[5:32:23 PM] Brad says: Forrest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey will now remind us The Butler is an ensemble nominee. Still sort of amazes me that film was blanked at the Oscar noms and well honored as a nominee at the SAGs.

[5:33:38 PM] Brad says: We got to see the seat fillers being kicked out of their chairs so Whitaker and Winfrey could sit down. Good television.

[5:33:56 PM] Brad says: Hey, it’s John Goodman! He’s introducing Best Ensemble in a Comedy.

[5:36:15 PM] Brad says: My god, these intros are so long… I vote for “Veep” if that matters.

[5:36:32 PM] Brad says: And the winner is “Modern Family”

[5:37:14 PM] Brad says: They apparently sat outside on the sidewalk.

[5:38:22 PM] Brad says: How do you spell “funny” the same way Sofia Vergara pronounces it? Oh, and she just thanked her “boobs”.

[5:38:37 PM] Brad says: Another commercial break… Refill time.

[5:40:37 PM] Brad says: This Muppets Most Wanted trailer is pretty good.

[yt id =”1MGy_-j7d3A” width=”610″]

[5:41:27 PM] Brad says: Hey, don’t talk trash to me about the Niners and Crabtree. Crabtree won’t save you. HE WON’T!

[5:44:22 PM] Brad says: We’re back, lots of clips about how great SAG is.

[5:44:54 PM] Brad says: SAG President, Ken Howard, will now remind us how important SAG-AFTRA is… again.

[5:46:38 PM] Brad says: He’s still talking. I haven’t left you.

[5:48:37 PM] Brad says: Don Cheadle and Julia Louis-Drefus will now announce winners for Best Actress in a TV movie or mini-series.

[5:50:23 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Helen Mirren (“Phil Spector”)

[5:51:11 PM] Brad says: Helen Mirren just gave a shout out to Elisabeth Moss (who won the Globe), Moss was clearly appreciative.

[5:52:02 PM] Brad says: Laremy just texted asking if my mom won an Actor yet. She has not.

[5:52:41 PM] Brad says: Julia Roberts and Meryl Strep will now remind us August: Osage County is a Best Ensemble nominee.

[5:52:56 PM] Brad says: They are standing really close to one another.

[5:53:10 PM] Brad says: I think Julia is drunk.

[5:54:20 PM] Brad says: Ewan McGregor and Emma Thompson are the next ones out to present and Emma takes an appropriate jab at the night’s music.

[5:54:35 PM] Brad says: And the winner for an Actor in a TV movie or mini-series.

[5:54:55 PM] Brad says: At least Thompson knows how to take the piss out of things and do it in a way that’s entertaining.

[5:55:12 PM] Brad says: Damon or Douglas wins this… probably Douglas

[5:56:18 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Michael Douglas (“Behind the Candelabra”)

[6:04:55 PM] Brad says: Oh, Lifetime Achievement, here comes Rita Moreno.

[6:06:08 PM] Brad says: In case you didn’t know, Moreno starred in West Side Story and is one of only 12 EGOT winners as well as a winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

[6:15:32 PM] Brad says: Okay, I know people love Rita Moreno, but someone needs to help them write their acceptance speeches. If you enjoy it, good for you, but my god…

[6:16:29 PM] Brad says: I hope she sings more.

[6:17:17 PM] Brad says: Here comes a well-deserved commercial break…

[6:21:06 PM] Brad says: Great, the Apple iPad commercial again. They are now selling words, not quality products. Then again, I love my iMac. I’m such a hypocrite. Feel free to mock me.

[6:23:00 PM] Brad says: Wow, a clip of Renee Zellweger, remember her?

[6:23:35 PM] Brad says: James Marsden and Mindy Kaling will now announce Best Actress in a Drama.

[6:24:15 PM] Brad says: If that clip from “Homeland” is indicative of the writing on the show, uh, no thanks. “Yeah dad, I did!”

[6:25:14 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”). She’s not there… moving on.

[6:25:52 PM] Brad says: Now Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sarah Paulson will now remind us 12 Years a Slave is a Best Ensemble nominee.

[6:27:06 PM] Brad says: Love seeing the seat fillers being removed. Riveting and classy.

[6:27:26 PM] Brad says: Now for Best Actor in a Drama…

[6:29:08 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”)

[6:30:03 PM] Brad says: Oh yes, and he sings! So great. Thank you Bryan.

[6:31:31 PM] Brad says: Tom Hanks will now introduce the In Memoriam segment.

[6:37:49 PM] Brad says: Oh great, another drama about singing or whatever the hell it is. Bet the wife will DVR that one too, just like whatever it was she was watching this afternoon with the two girls, one of them was saying, “Like, you know, I like to shop and I just got this new Hermes bag. Whatever! And then, like, she said something funny and we laughed.” Yeah, good times. Remember “Revenge” is on tomorrow night…

[6:38:52 PM] Brad says: Speaking of which, why wasn’t “Revenge” nominated? Emily was shot on that boat and now she doesn’t even remember who she is!?!?!?! ABC knows Drama!

[6:40:44 PM] Brad says: Tina Fey is our next presenter

[6:41:10 PM] Brad says: Oh, and here’s a Maleficent sneak peek.

[yt id =”TLqVIntpW_g” width=”610″]

[6:41:50 PM] Brad says: She is presenting Best Ensemble in a TV Drama

[6:42:18 PM] Brad says: This has to be “Breaking Bad”

[6:44:23 PM] Brad says: And the winner is “Breaking Bad”

[6:45:17 PM] Brad says: First win for “Breaking Bad” in that category eh?

[6:46:42 PM] Brad says: Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto will now introduce Dallas Buyers Club as a fellow nominee in Best Ensemble. After that I think it’s nothing but movie awards. We made it!

[6:47:51 PM] Brad says: Now it’s Jennifer Lawrence out to award Best Actor in a MOVIE!

[6:48:03 PM] Brad says: Ejiofor or McConaughey?

[6:49:33 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)

[6:50:42 PM] Brad says: Wow, he’s sweeping the board. Globe, Critics Choice, SAG… He will remain my frontrunner at the Oscars.

[6:52:10 PM] Brad says: Maybe I missed it, did he thank Richard Linklater yet?

[6:52:51 PM] Brad says: Commercial break folks, eight minutes to go…

[6:57:51 PM] Brad says: Okay, looks like we may go a little over, but the Blanchett win can’t take too much time then it will be all about Ensemble… Will American Hustle take it?

[6:58:40 PM] Brad says: Robert De Niro is out to announce Best Actress

[7:00:41 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)

[7:03:30 PM] Brad says: That pic is via. Oh, and Blanchett just donated the “penis part” of her award to Sally Hawkins.

[7:04:09 PM] Brad says: Ben Affleck will now announce Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

[7:04:30 PM] Brad says: And the winner is American Hustle

[7:05:55 PM] Brad says: Well, that makes me five-for-five, but I have to ask, who is the short lady on the stage? Am I crazy? Should I know who that is?

[7:07:46 PM] Brad says: That does it for me folks, have a great night and stay tuned, tomorrow the PGAs will announce their choice for Best Picture and we’ll be talking Oscar predictions on Monday.
