The predictions are in and it looks like it’s going to be a big weekend for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug if these numbers have anything to say about it, but it doesn’t look like anyone is expecting it to do any better than the first one. In fact, both Laremy and the readers predict it will make less than The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which opened to $84.6 million last year. It already brought in $8.8 million from midnight screenings, which is less than its predecessor so it seems the decline may have already started.
There also appears to be high expectations for Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas with the readers predicting just under $30 million and Laremy just over. As Laremy pointed out in his Oracle article, these films can run a wide range of results, but with the holidays it seems this one may find some success.
Next we come to Disney’s Frozen in it’s third week and again Laremy and the readers are rather close, though the readers see a slightly smaller drop with the film still cracking $20 million.
NOTE: I am taking a vacation over the next week and my box office updates may come a little later than normal, but don’t worry, I will be getting to them.
I’ve included Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all 90 reader predictions for this weekend click here.
