This morning Aziz Ansari, Zoe Saldana, Olivia Wilde and Miss Golden Globe, Sosie Bacon announced the 2014 Golden Globe Award nominations in 25 categories. I have included all of the nominees directly below.
Looking over the list, it’s always hard to tell with the Globes what could be considered a snub or an oversight. It’s easy to see, however, they don’t know what the word “original” means as “Please Mr. Kennedy” from Inside Llewyn Davis received an Original Song nomination, despite not being original.
12 Years a Slave and American Hustle were the two most nominated films, each scoring seven nominations between the Drama and Musical/Comedy categories where the org seemed to do a pretty good job distinguishing between comedy and drama although to consider Nebraska and Her comedies seems a bit of a stretch, but what’s the use in complaining? I mean, we could then start debating what makes those comedies and Philomena a drama by comparison. I give up.
If you’re looking for momentum, the Globes are hardly bellwether nominations, but the second nomination in two days for Daniel Bruhl for Rush is significant and same goes for Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips). Additionally, while the Screen Actors Guild showed a lot of love for Lee Daniels’ The Butler, it didn’t receive a single nomination from the HFPA.
The Wolf of Wall Street received a few noms, whereas it was blanked by SAG, where most of the members hadn’t yet seen the film. In fact, I’m a little surprised it received any Globe noms as I’m not sure how many of their members saw it either.
The fact neither the Screen Actors Guild and now the Globes have both ignored Fruitvale Station may mean trouble for the great little film and it’s interesting to see the HFPA nominated Saving Mr. Banks only once (Emma Thompson), nothing for Tom Hanks and it’s absence from the Best Musical/Comedy category is noticeable.
The 2014 Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live at 5:00-8:00 p.m. (PST)/8:00-11:00 p.m. EST on Sunday, January 14, 2013. The festivities will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and just like last year we will be here with a live blog and winners as always. If you’ve never tuned in for that, just click here to check out last year’s coverage.
