Could ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Really be Worth the Wait?

After lengthy production delays due to weather, George Miller finally finished production on Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth film in the Mad Max series in 2012 with Tom Hardy taking over the role made famous by Mel Gibson 34 years ago. Reports of additional shooting beginning tomorrow, November 22, were recently revealed with “at least some members of the ensemble cast have also been asked to take part in the three-week shoot.”

It was assumed the film would eventually be released in 2014, but now Warner Bros. has made official a May 15, 2015 release date, two weeks after The Avengers: Age of Ultron and one week before Brad Bird‘s Tomorrowland starring George Clooney.

As I recently pointed out, 2015 was already awash with sequels and franchise starters and continuations. I can’t help but wonder why exactly WB would think releasing this film smack dab in the middle of all that would be a good idea. All I can come up with is that it must have some level of unique flavor that would allow it to stand out from the rest.

Along with Hardy, the film co-stars Charlize Theron, Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens, Nicholas Hoult, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Megan Gale.

The film follows Mad Max Rockatansky (Hardy), who is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a war rig driven by Imperator Furiosa (Theron). Max (Hardy) is protecting a group of women known as the “Five Wives,” which includes Kravitz as Toast, Keough as Capable, Huntington-Whiteley as Splendid, Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile.

If anything, it makes the eventual release of the film a curiosity.
