FilmmakerIQ.com has released another interesting new lesson, this one taking a look at “The Psychology of Scary Movies” and examining theories as to what makes us want to be scared. This includes brain scan research, theories posed by Freud, Jung and Aristotle, the variety of horror “categories” and so forth.
Personally I think there is little difference between a movie that scares and a movie that thrills. I think they’re one in the same as it’s largely the mystery that makes us tense. It’s our brains, however, that decided whether we’re “scared” or if we’re problem solving, or both, and this video gets into all of that just as I started to yesterday with my review of Criterion’s latest Blu-ray for The Uninvited.
Give the lesson a watch and leave your thoughts in the comments below.
