John Steinbeck‘s literary classic “East of Eden” has been tackled a couple of notable times, the first of which is obviously Elia Kazan‘s adaptation starring James Dean and Jo Van Fleet and the second being 1981’s mini-series starring Timothy Bottoms and Jane Seymour. Now Jennifer Lawrence is the first to sign on for a new adaptation, reteaming with her The Hunger Games director, Gary Ross.
Ross apparently wants to tell the generational story across two films, telling the story of two sons competing for the attention of their father. Lawrence is being sought to play Cathy Ames, the two boys’ presumed dead mother.
Imagine Entertainment will produce for Universal Pictures.
Ross is currently set to direct Peter and the Starcatchers for Walt Disney Pictures while Lawrence will be seen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and reteaming with her Silver Linings Playbook director for American Hustle, both in theaters later this year.
