Xerxes for ‘300’ Sequel, Scorsese and DiCaprio, ‘Videodrome’ Notes, ‘Paranormal 4’ Writer, Release Dates and More

Criterion has published eight response cards left after a test screening of David Cronenberg‘s 1983 cult classic Videodrome when asked what they liked and/or disliked about the movie. The one above was my favorite, but if you click the source link you’ll find eight more and they are all quite great. [source]

The release date deluge continues as several new dates were set in the last 24 hours. First there’s the sci-fi feature Oblivion from Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) starring Tom Cruise, which has moved from a July 2013 release to April 26, 2013. Filling that old July slot, Universal announced Jurassic Park will have a 3-D re-release on July 19, 2013.

Over at CBS Films they are setting things up as well giving the Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana dramatic thriller The Words a September 21, 2012 release; Seven Psychopaths, the highly anticipated new film from Martin McDonagh (In Bruges), will hit theaters on November 2, 2012 and Gambit, starring Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth has received a not-so-promising January 11, 2013 date. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are ready to team on The Wolf of Wall Street, an adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s tell-all autobiography centering a Long Island penny stockbroker (DiCaprio) who served 20 months in prison for refusing to cooperate in a massive 1990s securities fraud case that involved widespread corruption on Wall Street and in the corporate banking world, including mob infiltration. Shooting will begin August in New York. [source]

Brad Pitt is now rumored for a small part in Ridley Scott‘s The Counselor, which was written by Cormac McCarthy and centers on a present-day Southwest lawyer (Michael Fassbender) who thinks he can dip a toe into the drug business without getting sucked down. A bad decision. He tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation, but can he? The rumored part is for a character named Westray, a business associate of the counselor’s. Natalie Portman, Javier Bardem and Jeremy Renner have been rumored for the film as well with either Bardem or Renner being eyed for the role of the film’s villain, Reiner. [source]

Speaking of Renner, he is also rumored for a role in Albert Hughes‘s Motor City with him being eyed for the film’s lead role, which previously saw the likes of Chris Evans, Dominic Cooper and Jake Gyllenhaal attached. Word is if he doesn’t get the role in The Counselor he’ll likely take this. [source]

Keira Knightley is reportedly in early talks for the lead role in Safe Haven, a film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel with Lasse Hallstrom (The Cider House Rules) set to direct. [source]

Lionsgate along with WWE Studios are looking to remake the 1993 horror film Leprechaun with the head of WWE Studios, Michael Luisi, saying, “We have been looking for ways to continue our relationship with Lionsgate and we saw Leprechaun as the perfect opportunity to take a well-known franchise and put a modern-day spin on it. This is a property that we believe our audience will respond to and we continue to look for ways to surprise and engage them.” [source]

300: Battle of Artemisia is coming up and Rodrigo Santoro is set to reprise his role as the bedazzled giant Xerxes. The new film is said to take place at the same time as the original with a battle set in a different location, Santoro as Xerxes and Eva Green as Artemisia will play the film’s two villains. We already knew Paranormal Activity 3 helmers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost were returning to direct Paranormal Activity 4, which has already established an October 19, 2012 release date, but now we learn Zack Estrin, writer/producer of ABC’s “The River“, has been assigned the task of writing the script. Considering “The River” is an Oren Peli project it makes sense someone close to him would be brought in to continue what he started, but boy are they setting themselves up for a tight turnaround. Nathan Fillion (Serenity) is set to star as the messenger of the Gods, Hermes, in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. [source]

Halle Berry is set to star in the thriller The Hive for director Brad Anderson (The Machinist). While the title makes it sound like a B-movie horror about killer bees, it’s actually something entirely different. The fast-paced suspense pic is set against the backdrop of a 911 call center where Berry will play an emergency operator who must face her own fears in order to save a teenage girl from a disturbed killer. Total Film debuted the pic you see above of Ray Park as Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The film is set to hit theaters on June 29.

Michael Fassbender is looking to continue to keep busy over the next couple years as he eyes yet another film for his upcoming slate, this time The Mountain Between Us for 20th Century Fox and director Gerardo Naranjo whose Miss Bala was very well received last year. Should the deal come together, Fassbender would play Ben Trace, a doctor and avid climber who uses his skills to transport an injured writer named Ashley down a mountain in harsh weather. [source]

And finally, yet another poster for The Avengers arrives, this time piecing the recent character posters together for one giant banner. Give the image below a click for a larger look.
