Joel Kinnaman Reportedly Offered Role as ‘RoboCop’

I wouldn’t traditionally post this story since there aren’t necessarily any details to go with it, but considering I posted about Easy Money (Snabba Cash) earlier and discussed its star, Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”), it only seemed appropriate.

Deadline.com is reporting Kinnaman has been offered the title role in MGM’s attempt to reboot RoboCop for Elite Squad helmer Jose Padilha. This makes him just the latest in a series of names attached to the role with previous rumors involving Chris Pine (Star Trek, This Means War) and even Russell Crowe.

The original film, as I’m sure most of you know, was released in 1987 and directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer resurrected as an unstoppable cyborg. Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct for the longest time, but fell off long ago and was replaced by Padilha. Joshua Zetumer‘s (Quantum of Solace) draft of the screenplay was most recently re-written by Nick Schenk (Gran Torino).

As of right now the thought is the film may head into production this summer for a 2013 release. As far as what to expect, Padilha discussed the project with ComingSoon back in November and said:

“In the first RoboCop when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts. How do you make RoboCop? How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how do you program a brain, so to speak, and how does that affect an individual?”

When it comes to Kinnaman, I’m sure many have seen him in AMC’s “The Killing”, if you saw David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo he played Christer Malm and I invite you to click here and learn a little more about the role that brought him to the attention of the international stage.
