Tonight the Screen Actors Guild handed out the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards and it was a night that offered very few surprises though there was that one moment that caught me off guard.
To begin, The Help took home all three awards it was expected to win with Viola Davis winning Best Actress, Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress and the cast winning for Best Ensemble. Looking at these results I think you’d be pretty foolish to bet against Davis or Spencer at the Oscars in February, though I don’t think this means anything for the film’s Best Picture chances. However, one film’s Oscar chances got yet another leg up tonight.
George Clooney was the clear front-runner in the Best Actor category for The Descendants, but he did not take home the award as Jean Dujardin won for The Artist, giving the film its second bump of the weekend after director Michel Hazanavicius won at the Directors Guild last night.
While this obviously gives the film even more support in the Best Picture category, it also begs the question, is Dujardin now the front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar? Many have had him in that slot leading up to this point and I am thinking he may be the one to beat. One thing is for sure, The Artist may be looking at a big night come late February.
Finally, Christopher Plummer took home Best Supporting Actor for Beginners as he marches his way to the Oscars where he will add an Oscar to his mantle next to a SAG award, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award.
With that said, the night didn’t teach us much else. I have listed all the winners in bold red below, including the television winners where all the likely suspects ended up winning. I’ve also updated my “Oscar Overture” section with the win for The Help under the SAG Awards icon and you can also check out all of tonight’s SAG Award winners along with the history of SAG winners right here.
