Box-Office Wrap-Up: ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ Scores $54 Million While ‘The Change-Up’ Stumbles

Predictions were all over the board for this weekend’s two new releases, but the Apes have risen and over-performed to pretty much everyone’s satisfaction. Plus, I’ve added yet another new statistic to each film to help present a larger picture. Let’s break it down…
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 2 Weeks In A Row
Only a 41% drop for the little blue guys in their second week and there’s still one more weekend left before Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World makes a bid at appealing to the younger audience.
Weekend: $21 million (-41% drop) / Cume: $76.2 million / RottenTomatoes: 21%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $19.22 million, which is $1.78m off for a 8.48% error.
Oof, a near 60% drop for a film that underperformed in the first place is not a good sign. >Cowboys & Aliens has yet to open in foreign territories, and I have a hard time believing it will have much international appeal.
Weekend: $15.7 million (-56.9% drop) / Cume: $67.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 44%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $20.4 million, which is $4.7m off for a 29.94% error.
I contributed not only to the box-office total of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but also to The Change-Up this weekend, but it appears my group of four wasn’t enough to give this film a very impressive opening. Too bad, I think it is quite the funny film.

As for predictions go, Laremy was a bit high as were most of the predictions that ranged from the low teens all the way up to $33 million as both of this weekend’s new releases were tricky picks. Chris Etrata, however, wasn’t confused when it came to this one as his $13 million prediction bested the board.

Weekend: $13.5 million / RottenTomatoes: 20%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $16.8 million, which is $3.3m off for a 24.44% error.
A 49% dip in its third weekend as Captain America has now crossed the $140 million mark, which is to say its domestic total is now just a few million above its budget. International dollars have started to come in with BoxOfficeMojo reporting $76 million from foreign markets as of my publishing of this post. You tell me, do these numbers say success or failure to you?
Weekend: $13 million (-49% drop) / Cume: $143.1 million / RottenTomatoes: 79%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $11.76 million, which is $1.24m off for a 9.54% error.
By this time next weekend Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 will likely pass Transformers: Dark of the Moon for the highest grossing domestic release of 2011 so far. Good for the boy wizard.
Weekend: $12.16 million (-44.5% drop) / Cume: $342.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 97%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $13.19 million, which is $1.03m off for a 8.47% error.
Only a 36.6% drop in its second weekend and Crazy, Stupid, Love is still trying to cut into that $50 million budget. Seriously, how did they spend that much money on this film?
Weekend: $12.1 million (-36.6% drop) / Cume: $42.1 million / RottenTomatoes: 75%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $9.93 million, which is $2.17m off for a 17.93% error.
With four wide releases hitting theaters next weekend you can pretty much count on not hearing from any of these bottom four films in the top ten again. Say bye, bye.
Weekend: $4.7 million (-48.9% drop) / Cume: $48.5 million / RottenTomatoes: 69%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $4.73 million, which is $0.03m off for a 0.64% error.
Horrible Bosses is the third R-rated comedy to cross the $100 million mark and one of two Jason Bateman R-rated comedies to be in the weekend top ten. Good on ya Bates.

However, the bigger R-rated comedy story of the weekend is Bridesmaids, which has now crossed the $250 million mark worldwide with $166.5 million domestically, another $89.8 million internationally on a $33 million budget.

Weekend: $4.6 million (-35.2% drop) / Cume: $105.1 million / RottenTomatoes: 69%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.35 million, which is $1.25m off for a 27.17% error.
This is the last we’ll probably talk of this film until its suspected November 15 DVD and Blu-ray release date, though I will probably give it one last mention next weekend when Harry Potter passes it to become the highest domestic release of 2011. Both, however, have already crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. You have to wonder, when will we hear of Transformers 4 heading into production. They can’t possibly not continue the franchise… can they?
Weekend: $3 million (-50% drop) / Cume: $344.1 million / RottenTomatoes: 36%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $2.62 million, which is $0.38m off for a 12.67% error.

In other new release news, the limited release must see Bellflower opened in only two theaters and took in $24,000 and the Rachel Weisz-led The Whistleblower opened in seven theaters and brought in $58,100.

And now comes time to explore our options when it comes to next week’s offerings.

Things begin early on Wednesday, August 10 as The Help hits theaters. It’s a solid film and one that is going to bring in a lot of money, but what will the early opening do when it comes to predicting its weekend box-office total?

Opening next Friday we have another R-rated comedy in 30 Minutes or Less, the R-rated 3D experience Final Destination 5 and Glee: The 3D Concert Movie. You expecting any of these to break out?
