First Look at Gerard Butler in Potential Oscar Hopeful ‘Machine Gun Preacher’

The title may not say Oscar, but the nature of the film sure does suggest we may be looking at a film that might earn Gerard Butler his first Oscar nomination, which would be quite a change considering the actor’s rash of rather bad choices since his abs made him a big star in Zack Snyder’s 300 five years ago.

Directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland, Monster’s Ball), Machine Gun Preacher stars Butler alongside Michelle Monaghan and Michael Shannon in a film based on the true story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who finds faith leading him on a path to East Africa. Shocked by the mayhem in Sudan, Childers becomes a crusader for hundreds of refugee children. Inspired to create a safe haven for the multitudes fleeing enslavement by the brutal Lord’s Resistance Army, he restores peace to their lives and eventually his own.

Above is our first look at the film courtesy of Relativity Media which is set to debut the feature in New York and Los Angeles on September 23, which is to say a Toronto Film Festival debut may be in the near future. If you’d like a slightly larger look at the pic you can click here.
