2011 Oscars Live Blog: Oscar Winners and Commentary

[7:00:48 PM] Brad says: Next up is Documentary, which has three major possibilities including Inside Job, Exit through the Gift Shop and Waste Land.

[7:01:17 PM] Brad says: My pick is Inside Job and I am 75% confident on it.

[7:01:38 PM] Laremy says: Now the only way I can lose my dollar is if Hooper tops Fincher for Best Director. I think not.

[7:03:38 PM] Laremy says: Yeah, Inside Job feels lockish to me. I’d go as high as 90 percent.

[7:03:57 PM] Brad says: Kevin Spacey is introducing the first Oscar nominated Original Song, Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3. This isn’t too great, I’m starting to doubt my prediction…

[7:05:55 PM] Brad says: Now “I See the Light” from Tangled with Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi… hopefully they can deliver and so far Moore is definitely an improvement, including a dress change from what she was wearing on the red carpet. But where’s the horse?

[7:06:29 PM] Brad says: Oh wait, is that Sarah Jess… Nevermind.

[7:06:44 PM] Laremy says: Tangled was underrated. Hard to get any kind of ranking these days if you’re not working for Pixar.

[7:07:02 PM] Brad says: Way to go Moore and Levi, that was better, and the song I would personally pick to win the Oscar.

[7:10:58 PM] Brad says: By my count we have an hour and 50 minutes to go. Somehow that doesn’t seem too bad.

[7:12:49 PM] Laremy says: Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams are here to present the documentary categories. Because when you think of documentaries, you think of these two.

[7:12:52 PM] Brad says: Jake G is having a hard time reading the teleprompter.

[7:14:10 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Strangers No More, which means the online consensus proved accurate. Shocking for these shorts categories, of which I did not predict this year. So there.

[7:15:03 PM] Laremy says: Finally, I come through on a short call. I’m 12 for 15, and heating up.

[7:15:24 PM] Brad says: Now live action short film… I think Na We We was what I heard was the front-runner.

[7:15:46 PM] Brad says: And the winner is God of Love. Forget what I said a few seconds ago.

[7:16:30 PM] Brad says: This guy looks like Howard Stern in the early years. Could have played him in Private Parts.

[7:16:56 PM] Brad says: Like him though, his mom did craft services for the film.

[7:18:18 PM] Brad says: Now they are dropping an auto-tuned version of a scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Dig it. Now Toy Story 3… and etc.

[7:18:26 PM] Laremy says: 13 for 16. Getting two out of three in the short categories is nothing short of miraculous.

[7:19:32 PM] Brad says: Oh, and Hathaway is on her latest wardrobe change.

[7:19:43 PM] Laremy says: I don’t think The Academy needs auto-tune, just in general.

[7:20:25 PM] Laremy says: Right before she gives out the Best Documentary Oscar, Oprah should tell all these people that they get a new Prius.

[7:21:16 PM] Brad says: Curious to see if anything interesting happens if Banksy were to win.

7:21:30 PM: And the winner for Documentary (feature) is Inside Job

[7:21:48 PM] Brad says: Well, I guess we’ll never find out.

[7:22:56 PM] Brad says: I’m 11 for 14 right now with only Best Director worrying me at this point. I have a bad feeling after The Social Network won for Best Score and my pick for Tom Hooper doesn’t seem too good any longer.

[7:24:01 PM] Brad says: Next up is Visual Effects, which means Inception is about to win its third Oscar.

[7:24:45 PM] Brad says: Excuse me… fourth Oscar, forgot about the cinematography win.

[7:26:43 PM] Brad says: So by my count, Inception may end up winning the most Oscars this year, or at least tied for most. You gotta enjoy that even if they aren’t the major awards its winning.

[7:26:54 PM] Laremy says: Billy Crystal time!

[7:27:22 PM] Brad says: Billy Crystal is coming out, just to prove he’s not exactly relevant any longer.

[7:28:58 PM] Laremy says: Yep, good to see Inception get some love. It looks as though it will end up being a very fragmented field, with the rare Best Director / Best Picture split.

[7:29:52 PM] Brad says: Billy Crystal is really targeting the younger demographic with this Bob Hope retrospective.

[7:30:15 PM] Laremy says: For the record, the remainder of my picks:

Visual Effects: Inception

Film Editing: The Social Network

Original Song: “We Belong Together” Toy Story 3

Best Director: David Fincher, The Social Network

Leading Actress: Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Leading Actor: Colin Firth, The King’s Speech

Best Picture: The King’s Speech

[7:31:47 PM] Laremy says: Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are here to present Best Visual Effects and Film Editing. Here’s what I like about Jude Law. The two syllable name. Always works. Ang Lee, Chris Rock, and Bruce Wayne. See? Always.

[7:32:45 PM] Brad says: Oh. So. Witty. Mr. Downey and Mr. Law… Nice Sherlock Holmes promo, now give Inception Oscar number four.

7:33:26 PM: And the winner for Visual Effects is Inception

[7:34:54 PM] Brad says: By the way, if you want the Oscar count just go here. You may have to hit refresh.

[7:35:17 PM] Brad says: Editing time. Big one. Will Social win it?

[7:35:26 PM] Laremy says: Film Editing has to go to The Social Network, right?

7:35:29 PM: And the winner for Film Editing is The Social Network

[7:37:15 PM] Laremy says: As far as I’m concerned, those were both nice calls by The Academy.

[7:37:37 PM] Brad says: Another commercial break ladies and gents and we have the next two Original Song contenders coming up along with the presentation of the award and then we get to the biggies, beginning with Best Director.

[7:42:50 PM] Laremy says: So Dido isn’t here to sing her own song. That means she’s Banksy, right?

[7:42:51 PM] Brad says: More Oscar songs… First is “If I Rise” from 127 Hours followed by “Coming Home” from Country Strong… then it’s winner time as presented by Jennifer Hudson.

7:46:35 PM: And the winner for Music (Original Song) is Toy Story 3 for “We Belong Together”

[7:47:16 PM] Brad says: Is this guy trying to be Rodney Dangerfield?

[7:47:46 PM] Brad says: Randy Newman got jokes. Too bad they aren’t funny.

[7:47:53 PM] Brad says: Strike up the band.

[7:50:18 PM] Laremy says: I could still theoretically go 21 for 24 this evening. But Best Director and Best Picture would be massive misses if surprises happen there.

[7:51:36 PM] Brad says: What’s the temperature out there on Best Picture and Best Director at this point? I have Hooper and The King’s Speech, but both feel risky at this point.

[7:53:09 PM] Brad says: Celine Dion is now going to sing “Smile” during the In Memoriam segment… I’ll take a back seat for a moment.

[7:55:30 PM] Brad says: If you like Celine Dion don’t go on Twitter, a lot of negative things being said about her right now.

[7:57:25 PM] Laremy says: It sounds like they are playing off Halle Berry’s tribute to Lena Horne. I know they aren’t, but it was just a very odd musical choice.

[7:58:29 PM] Brad says: We have Best Director coming up and I am 14 for 17 at the moment. My Hooper pick feels dicey.

[8:00:29 PM] Brad says: Hitting the last hour so we’ll do one last page break.
