2011 Oscars Live Blog: Oscar Winners and Commentary

[6:22:02 PM] Brad says: And coming up next is Best Foreign Language Film. My bet is on In a Better World… You?

[6:22:31 PM] Brad says: Oh, I should also point out, the readers were predicting Biutiful, a bit of a downer feature, but a good one nonetheless.

[6:23:53 PM] Brad says: Uh oh, sounds like we’re about to get our first musical number.

[6:25:28 PM] Laremy says: Hathaway has singing chops, but the joke was more cute than funny.

[6:25:53 PM] Brad says: James Franco is now out, dressed as Marilyn Monroe and we get the night’s first Charlie Sheen joke.

[6:25:58 PM] Laremy says: Franco and Hathaway are definitely going for it, but the material doesn’t seem to be there.

[6:27:01 PM] Laremy says: Russell Brand and Helen Mirren are here to present Best Foreign Language Film. I’m surprised to say their Arthur remake looks good, but Brad just mentioned he thinks it looks awful. Lesson: It takes a village.

[6:27:23 PM] Brad says: Oh, it would be great of Dogtooth won this. That would be forward thinking.

6:27:40 PM: And the winner for Foreign Language Film is In a Better World

[6:28:56 PM] Brad says: In a Better World is a phenomenal movie by the way.

[6:29:25 PM] Laremy says: 5 for 8 and feeling great!

[6:30:20 PM] Laremy says: Reese Witherspoon is presenting for Best Supporting Actor because Mo’Nique turned them down cold. The Academy couldn’t have seen that coming. I’m sure they were all “Pardon?”

[6:30:23 PM] Brad says: I’ve got Christian Bale here, as I think pretty much everyone else has… Right?

[6:31:21 PM] Brad says: John Hawkes won the Spirit Award yesterday, wouldn’t it be amazing if we got an out of left field winner? A little spice never hurt anyone, especially an award show.

6:32:25 PM: And the winner for Best Supporting Actor is Christian Bale (The Fighter)

[6:32:49 PM] Laremy says: 6 for 9 and feeling fine! Okay, I’m done rhyming the results, promise.

[6:33:40 PM] Brad says: I’ve really liked Bale’s approach to this award season. He’s been congratulatory and accepted his awards graciously. Funny, entertaining and now he’s poking fun at his Terminator Salvation rant. Great guy!

[6:34:37 PM] Brad says: Wow, even a dickeklund.com shout out… that the crowd actually booed. What gives Academy?

[6:35:01 PM] Brad says: Oh man, Bale just broke every woman’s heart, cried thanking his wife and little girl, “His mast in the storm of life.”

[6:37:33 PM] Laremy says: I cosign your Bale compliments. He does it right.

[6:37:52 PM] Brad says: So I am now 7 for 8 and we have Original Score coming up, which could be a hit to my record. I have The King’s Speech, but The Social Network or even Inception could take this one. What do you guys have?

[6:39:40 PM] Brad says: I guess we are now taking a moment for station identification to announce ABC will broadcast the Oscars through 2020. How about we boo this Academy?

[6:40:04 PM] Brad says: Anne Hathaway is now working with outfit number three, or is it four?

[6:40:39 PM] Laremy says: Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are here to present Best Score. Sidenote: Do you remember how terrible Australia was? I’m pretty sure my night terrors are due to that.

[6:41:55 PM] Brad says: Now a rather cool send up to the original score starting with the Star Wars theme.

[6:43:22 PM] Brad says: I like this, the on the scene orchestra is playing each score as the nominees are announced.

[6:45:12 PM] Brad says: And the winner is Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Social Network

[6:45:36 PM] Laremy says: Boom. Glad to see a very solid score recognized. I’m now 7 for 10, and two Inception wins in a row in the sound categories would have me beaming.

[6:46:14 PM] Brad says: Man, now I’m 7 for 9. Come on Inception, win those sound awards.

[6:46:41 PM] Laremy says: Matt McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson are here to present Sound Mixing and Sound Editing. They both have very greasy hair. Not a bad thing, just how they are rolling tonight.

[6:47:44 PM] Brad says: Back on track and now 8 for 10. Can Inception also win Sound Editing?

6:50:08 PM: And the winner for Sound Editing is Inception

[6:50:26 PM] Brad says: That puts me at 9 for 11 for the night with Best Makeup on the horizon. Will The Wolfman make me 10 for 12?

[6:50:43 PM] Laremy says: Inception takes both, well deserved. I especially like how the winners both thanked Christopher Nolan, a man who can’t catch a break from The Academy.

[6:51:36 PM] Brad says: Commercial break and we have Makeup, Costumes and Documentary on the way. My costume prediction is The King’s Speech, a period film has to win that right?

[6:53:53 PM] Laremy says: I think Wolfman is a lock and I’m already looking forward to our looming Best Costume battle.

[6:54:54 PM] Brad says: We are back and Marisa Tomei is out to talk about the Sci-Tech Awards which she presented earlier this month.

[6:55:10 PM] Brad says: 11 awards were handed out.

[6:55:45 PM] Laremy says: Franco’s best line of the night was “Congratulations, nerds” to the winners in the technical categories.

[6:55:49 PM] Brad says: Cate Blanchett is out to present Best Makeup and Costume Design.

[6:56:33 PM] Brad says: Makeup first…

6:56:53 PM: And the winner for Makeup is The Wolfman

[6:57:08 PM] Brad says: I believe this is Rick Baker’s seventh Oscar.

[6:58:09 PM] Laremy says: 10 wins, 3 losses for your gentleman blogger. But can Alice in Wonderland for Best Costume put me back in front of Brad?

[6:58:28 PM] Brad says: Now for costumes…

6:59:01 PM: And the winner for Costumes is Alice in Wonderland

[6:59:30 PM] Brad says: And that makes me 10 for 13 and is the first time a Tim Burton directed film has won for Best Costumes.

[7:00:11 PM] Brad says: Okay, with that I am going to insert another page break. meet us on page four.
