‘The King’s Speech’ Leads 2011 BAFTA Award Nominees

Tonight the 2011 Orange British Academy Film Award nominees were announced and to no surprise The King’s Speech led the way with 14 nominations in all the expected categories including Best Film alongside fellow nominees Black Swan, Inception, The Social Network and True Grit.

Oscar front-runner The Social Network scored six nominations, but was still behind Black Swan with 12 noms, Christopher Nolan’s Inception with nine, the Coen brothers’ True Grit scored eight and Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours received seven nominations.

Looking over the list really quickly I notice that not only was The Social Network not among the leading nominees it was also snubbed for Best Original Music, Cinematography and Sound. Elsewhere, Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence wasn’t nominated for Lead Actress as Noomi Rapace (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) was nominated instead. Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) wasn’t nominated either, but neither was Sally Hawkins for Made in Dagenham.

It is notable the BAFTAs at least recognized Lesley Manville’s performance in Another Year as a supporting role, but recent Golden Globe winner and assumed Oscar front-runner Melissa Leo (The Fighter) wasn’t nominated even though her co-star Amy Adams was along with Barbara Hershey (Black Swan) and Miranda Richardson (Made In Dagenham). Hershey’s nom is a bit out of the blue considering Mila Kunis has been getting the supporting love stateside for Black Swan.

Finally, the recently deceased Pete Postlethwaite was nominated for The Town over his co-star, and predicted Oscar nominee, Jeremy Renner. I was also a bit surprised to see Despicable Me get a nomination for Best Animated Film over Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist.

Overall, the BAFTAs once again offer up a slightly more British slant, but it’s nice to see a few different films and performances getting some notoriety. I’ve included the complete list of nominees directly below. The 2011 Orange British Academy Film Awards will be held on Sunday, February 13.
