The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Marc Webb’s Untitled Spider-Man Reboot has added a second villain to the fray in the form of Nels Van Adder to be played by Irrfan Khan whom most of you will remember as the Police Inspector from Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
I initially found nothing on the character in a search on the Internet, which may be due to the fact THR referred to the villain as “Van Atter” instead of what apparently should be “Van Adder.” Nels Van Adder to be exact.
Based on information at The Green Goblin’s Hideout, Van Adder was an employee of Osborn Industries and became a test subject for Norman Osborn (the character played by Willem Dafoe in the first Spider-Man feature) and as a result he turned into a demon-like monster the comics referred to as Proto-Goblin.
As you can see from the included image to the right, he’s a bit of a nasty little bugger who apparently tries to kill Norman until he is saved by Arthur and George Stacy (Denis Leary), the parents of Gwen Stacy, a character that will be played by Emma Stone.
The character is described at Wikipedia has having large claws, talons, fangs, glowing green eyes, and near impenetrable skin (capable of withstanding several close range bullet shots). He also appears as a boss in the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS videogame “Spider-Man: Battle for New York”.
Along with the casting of Khan, THR also reports Campbell Scott (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and Julianne Nicholson (Snatch) will play Peter Parker’s parents (not to be confused with his aunt and uncle) and Annie Parisse (National Treasure) will play Nelson Van Adder’s wife.
The four new actors join a cast that already includes Andrew Garfield (as Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans as the film’s other villain The Lizard, Martin Sheen as Ben Parker, Sally Field as Sally Parker and Denis Leary as George Stacy.
The film is set to go into production this December for a July 3, 2012 release date.
