After being released on December 18, 2009 James Cameron’s Avatar went on to make over $749 million domestically before it ended that theatrical run the weekend of August 6-8. However, only three weeks later it was back in theaters with a Special Edition release and earned an additional $10.5 million and is still in theaters as of this last weekend when it added another $22,738 from 19 theaters. The film is a $2.7 billion worldwide phenomenon, there is no doubt about it. The question is, are you ready for more? Do you want more? Are you willing to pay for more?

No matter how you answer those questions above you’re going to get more as today Fox Home Entertainment officially announced the November 16 release (November 15th internationally) of Avatar: Extended Collector’s Edition on both DVD and Blu-ray. Not only does this package come with the theatrical edition of the film, which was already released on bare bones DVD and Blu-ray back in April, but also the recent extended special edition that’s still in theaters and then an even longer version released exclusively on Blu-ray, clocking in at approximately 178 minutes including an alternate opening Earth scene.

The Blu-ray release will be a three-disc package that will include the three versions of the movie on the first disc and a feature length behind-the-scenes documentary titled “Capturing Avatar” and over 45 minutes of new never-before-seen deleted scenes on the second. The third disc then includes 17 additional featurettes, the 300 page screenplay, an extensive Pandorapedia and an Interactive Scene Deconstruction allowing viewers to explore the various stages of production through three different viewing modes.

The most intriguing feature would seem to be the “Pandora’s Box” feature available on the third disc, which will apparently allow viewers to experience the full film in three stages of production: Performance Capture, Template (1990’s video game version) and Final as well as a composite of all stages. This will be supported with interviews by Jim Cameron and the filmmakers and serve as a “master class” on the making of Avatar. This sounds a lot like the “all green screen” feature offered on the Sin City DVD a few years back as well as the one offered on Zack Snyder’s 300, both of which I thought were incredibly cool.

The box art is featured at the top of this post and you can click here or on the image above for a super-sized look at it and featured below is a look at the UK packaging.
