Hanks Casts ‘Crowne,’ Vergara Joins ‘Smurfs’ and Ronan Moves to Palos Verdes

Tom Hanks Tweets Larry Crowne Cast: If you like Tom Hanks you better get on board his Twitter account as he is keeping everyone up-to-date with all the goings ons with his new film Larry Crowne, which he co-wrote with Nia Vardalos, will direct and is starring in opposite his Charlie Wilson’s War co-star Julia Roberts and most recently he revealed the entire cast in a TwitPic photo as seen to the right. Hard to make out all the faces, the Internet worked overtime to get to the bottom of it and learned the list goes as such: Peter Scolari, Bryan Cranston, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wilmer Valderrama, Jon Seda, Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson, Rami Malek, Malcolm Barrett, Maria Canals Barrera, George Takei, Natascha McElhone, Holmes Osborne, Dale Dye and Bob Stephenson. The film will be released by Universal Pictures and centers on a middle-aged man being forced to find a new career. Filming is set to begin in April in Los Angeles. Ronan Set to Star in Tribes of Palos Verdes: Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) is in talks to star in Liz Friedlander’s The Tribes of Palos Verdes, an adaptation of Joy Nicholson’s surf-drama. The story centers on Medina Mason (Ronan) and her trials and tribulations moving from the Midwest to Southern California at which point she turns to surfing to get away from her former fashion-model mother, her twin brother, an absent father and the boys of Palos Verdes. Vergara joins The Smurfs and Happy Feet 2: Sofia Vergara (“Modern Family”) has landed a pair of film roles, beginning with The Smurfs in which she will play one of the live-action roles as Odile, a powerful executive at a high-end French cosmetics company who is the boss of the live-action character played by Neil Patrick Harris. The second film is a voice role in Happy Feet 2, which George Miller is already working on down under. Vergara joins a voice cast already made up of Brad Pitt, Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and Hank Azaria. [Heat Vision]

Confidential Director Set for Jay Moriarty: Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential) is set to direct Jay Moriarty, a biopic on the true adventures of the surfing wonderboy with Sean Penn in talks to play his mentor Rick “Frosty” Hesson. Moriarity made his reputation and carved his brief but glorious career out of mastering the feared K2 of surfing’s big-wave breaks, Maverick’s, in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. He died in 2001, one day before his 23rd birthday in a free diving accident. [Production Weekly]

Bekmambetov Attached to Direct Victor Frankenstein: Wanted helmer Timur Bekmambetov is attached to yet another film as it is now being reported he will helm David Auburn’s adaptation of Peter Ackroyd novel “Casebook of Victor Frankenstein,” a retelling of Mary Shelley’s horror classic told in first person. Samberg and Quinto Join Faris Comedy: Andy Samberg and Zachary Quinto are said to have joined the cast of Anna Faris’s R-rated comedy What’s Your Number?. Mark Mylod (“Entourage”) is set to direct the adaptation of Karyn Bosnak’s book “20 Times a Lady,” which Bosnak adapted herself with a rewrite by Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan. The story revolves around a young woman who, with the aid of her womanizing next door neighbor, decides to re-visit all her ex-boyfriends in the hopes of finding the man of her dreams. Samberg and Quinto will each play one of the ex-boyfriends along with previously cast Chris Evans. Filming is set to begin in May. 20th Century Fox will distribute. [EW]
